Authors: Dr. G. Arut Geevitha, Mr. Nilavan

Abstract: Street vending is an important part of the informal economy in urban India, providing a source of livelihood for millions of low-income individuals while also offering affordable goods and services to city residents. In Chennai, one of the fastest-growing metropolitan cities in the country, street vendors contribute significantly to the local economy and everyday urban life. However, despite their importance, they continue to face several serious challenges that affect their livelihood and economic stability. This study focuses on understanding the major difficulties experienced by street vendors in Chennai. These challenges include lack of proper legal recognition, frequent harassment by authorities, poor infrastructure, limited access to financial resources, increasing competition from organised retail outlets, and the effects of ongoing urban development policies. To carry out the research, primary data were collected from 120 street vendors across different zones of Chennai using structured questionnaires. Secondary data were gathered from government reports, academic journals, and official documents. The data were analysed using simple percentage analysis and chi-square tests. The findings show that harassment from authorities and the absence of fixed or permanent vending spaces are among the most pressing issues faced by vendors. Based on these results, the study suggests practical measures such as better policy implementation, improved infrastructure, and greater financial support to enhance the socio-economic conditions of street vendors and ensure their livelihood security.

Explainable AI Framework For Real-Time Financial Fraud Detection And Risk Scoring In Digital Payment Ecosystems

Authors: N. Rajarajeswari, Dr. Saley Seetharaman

Abstract: The explosive increase in the use of digital payment systems has led to an increase in complex financial scams. It is necessary to have intelligent detection and risk assessment systems that can detect and prevent potential financial crimes in real time. However, deep learning models have proven to be accurate, but their lack of transparency makes them unsuitable for highly regulated financial systems. In this study, we present a novel Explainable AI system to address fraud detection and risk assessment in real time. Our system includes a Temporal Fusion Transformer network model for sequence-aware fraud detection and a hybrid explainability module that incorporates feature-based SHAP, locally-explainable LIME, and counterfactually-generative rules to provide actionable explanations. We have evaluated our system on a real-world dataset comprising 10 million digital payments. Our experiments show that the proposed TFT achieves an area under curve (AUC) of 0.982, significantly better than XGBoost (0.965) and LSTM (0.971).

Exploring the Influence of School-Community Partnerships on Business Practices and Cultural Transformation in Chipangali District, Zambia

Authors: Sandra Chewe

Abstract: School-community partnerships represent a critical mechanism for improving educational outcomes, yet remain underdeveloped in many rural Zambian contexts. This study explored the influence of school-community partnerships on business practices and cultural transformation in Chipangali District, Zambia. The research employed a mixed-methods design, collecting data from 200 participants comprising 20 administrators, 50 teachers, 80 parents, and 50 students across five schools. Questionnaires, interview schedules, and focus group discussions served as primary data collection instruments. The study revealed that school-community relationships in Chipangali District are predominantly weak, characterized by minimal collaboration and mutual engagement. Three categories of barriers emerged: school-based factors (institutional operations and teacher attitudes), home-based factors (poverty and negative parental educational experiences), and community-based factors (culture of individualism and degenerating cooperative spirit). Despite these challenges, the study identified seven strategies for strengthening partnerships: open communication, collaborative partnership frameworks, parental involvement initiatives, community engagement programs, mutual respect, shared goals and values, and cultural sensitivity. The findings contribute to understanding how educational partnerships can be systematically developed in resource-constrained rural settings. The study recommends policy interventions mandating structured partnership frameworks, increased resource allocation for relationship-building activities, and community sensitization programs. These findings have implications for educational practice, policy development, and future research on school-community collaboration in similar contexts.

Exploring the Role of Civic Education in Fostering Democratic Values

Authors: Zulu Esther, Dr Phiri John

Abstract: This study examined the role of civic education in fostering democratic values among learners within selected secondary schools in Zambia. Civic education had long been regarded as a foundational component of democratic societies because it equipped citizens with essential knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary for informed participation in governance and community life. However, concerns regarding declining civic engagement, political apathy, and intolerance prompted the need to critically assess the effectiveness of civic education in nurturing democratic values such as tolerance, respect, active citizenship, and social responsibility. The study adopted a mixed-methods research design, employing questionnaires and semi-structured interviews to collect data from students and teachers involved in civic education programmes. Quantitative data were analysed using descriptive statistical techniques, while qualitative data were thematically analysed to capture deeper insights into participants’ experiences and perceptions. The findings were expected to reveal that civic education played a significant role in enhancing learners’ understanding of democratic principles and promoting positive civic attitudes, although its effectiveness was constrained by factors such as limited teaching resources, inadequate teacher preparation, and curriculum-related challenges. The significance of this study lay in its contribution to educational policy and practice by providing empirical evidence on how civic education influenced democratic values in schools. The findings were anticipated to inform policymakers, curriculum developers, and educators on strategies for strengthening civic education programmes so that they could more effectively support democratic participation and social cohesion in Zambia.

The Impacts of Non-Governmental Organization (Ngo) Involvement on Literacy Levels in Primary Schools of Lumezi District, Zambia

Authors: Changaya Morrison, Dr Phiri John

Abstract: This study examined the impacts of Non Governmental Organization (NGO) involvement on literacy levels in primary schools in Lumezi District, Eastern Province, Zambia. It addressed a persistent empirical gap about whether and how NGO literacy interventions translated into measurable improvements in early grade reading and writing. The study situated the problem within national and district evidence showing continued low learning outcomes despite increased NGO presence and framed the inquiry around program types, effectiveness, collaboration with local education authorities, changes in literacy before and after NGO engagement, and implementation challenges. A convergent mixed methods design was employed. Quantitative data were collected through an adapted Early Grade Reading Assessment (EGRA) style literacy test administered to Grade 2 and Grade 4 pupils and structured questionnaires for teachers and school administrators; qualitative data were gathered via semi structured interviews with NGO staff and DEBS officials, focus group discussions with parents and teachers, and document review. Quantitative analyses used descriptive statistics, paired samples t tests and ANOVA to compare pre and post intervention outcomes; qualitative data were analysed thematically and triangulated with quantitative findings to explain mechanisms and contextual constraints. The study produced evidence that NGO interventions produced short term gains in reading fluency and decoding where structured phonics, regular coaching and provision of leveled readers were implemented, while sustainability depended on the strength of collaboration with district education authorities, teacher retention, and local ownership. The findings underscored that coordination with DEBS and integration with national literacy frameworks enhanced continuity, whereas limited follow up, funding volatility and language mismatch constrained long term impact. The research concluded with recommendations to strengthen joint planning, embed capacity building within district systems, and prioritise mother tongue materials during early grades to improve and sustain literacy gains.

Factors Influencing Pupils’ Progression Rates from Grade Five to Grade Six: A Case Study of Selected Primary Schools in Petauke District

Authors: Martha Phiri, Dr Phiri John

Abstract: Pupil progression from one grade to the next is a critical indicator of educational efficiency, particularly in rural contexts where multiple challenges impede learning continuity. This study investigated the factors influencing pupils’ progression rates from Grade 5 to Grade 6 in selected primary schools within Petauke District, Eastern Province, Zambia. The research employed a mixed-methods design, combining quantitative data from questionnaires and school records with qualitative insights from interviews and focus group discussions involving teachers, pupils, parents, and education officers. Key findings revealed that pupil progression was influenced by an interplay of academic, institutional, socioeconomic, and cultural factors. While 46.7% of pupils were within the typical age range for Grades 5–6, delayed progression was linked to grade repetition, late school entry, and irregular attendance. Additional factors included inadequate learning materials, large class sizes, limited parental involvement, long distances to school, household chores, and food insecurity. Gender-specific challenges, particularly for girls, were also noted, including absenteeism due to menstrual hygiene and early marriage risks. Based on these findings, the study recommends: provision of adequate learning materials, school feeding programs to address nutritional gaps, transport support for pupils living far from school, teacher professional development to improve instructional quality, reduction of class sizes, and enhanced parental and community engagement. Implementing these measures is expected to improve progression rates, reduce repetition and dropout, and promote equitable, inclusive education in line with Sustainable Development Goal 4.

Exploring the Linguistic and Cultural Implications of Foreign Aid on English Language Curriculum Content: A Case Study of Selected Secondary Schools in Vubwi Zone, Vubwi District, Eastern Province, Zambia

Authors: Njekwa Sitali, Dr Phiri John

Abstract: This study explored the linguistic and cultural implications of foreign aid on English language curriculum content in selected secondary schools in Vubwi Zone, Vubwi District, Eastern Province, Zambia. It situated the inquiry within debates about curriculum sovereignty, linguistic equity, and cultural relevance, and it specified five objectives focused on donor influence, cultural fit of materials, teacher perceptions, latent ideological and linguistic biases, and strategies for textbook localization. The study presented a clear problem statement: externally produced English materials risked misalignment with local linguistic realities and cultural identities in rural Zambian classrooms. A qualitative case study design was employed to generate in-depth, contextually grounded evidence. Purposive sampling produced 30 participants (20 English teachers, 5 school administrators, and 5 curriculum officers) across ten schools. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, classroom observations, and systematic document review of donor-funded textbooks and teacher guides, and were analysed using thematic and discourse-analytic procedures. It was anticipated that the findings would reveal substantive donor influence on curriculum content, recurring cultural dislocations within textbook narratives and images, teacher-led adaptations in classroom practice, and subtle linguistic and ideological biases privileging foreign norms over local multilingual practices. The study contributed empirical insight into how foreign-funded ELT materials affected language teaching and learners’ cultural belonging in a rural Zambian setting, and it offered practicable strategies for localization. Findings were expected to inform policy discussions, guide curriculum developers and donor agencies toward more collaborative and context-sensitive resource design, and support schools in adopting adaptations that preserved cultural integrity while maintaining pedagogical effectiveness.

A Compact CNN-Based Approach For Fast And Accurate Pneumonia Detection Using Chest X-Ray Images

Authors: Princi Saini, Mridula

Abstract: Pneumonia is a serious respiratory disease that affects millions of people worldwide and remains a major cause of mortality, particularly among children and elderly individuals. Early and accurate diagnosis is essential for effective treatment; however, manual interpretation of chest X-ray images can be time-consuming and subject to human error. Recent advances in deep learning, especially Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), have demonstrated significant potential in automating medical image analysis and supporting clinical decision-making. This study proposes a compact and computationally efficient CNN-based framework for the automatic detection of pneumonia from chest X-ray images. The proposed model is designed to achieve a balance between diagnostic accuracy and computational efficiency, making it suitable for deployment in resource-constrained healthcare environments. A publicly available dataset consisting of 5,863 chest X-ray images, including both pneumonia and normal cases, was utilized for model development and evaluation. To improve data quality and model generalization, preprocessing techniques such as image resizing, normalization, denoising, contrast enhancement, and data augmentation were applied. The CNN architecture comprises four convolutional layers with ReLU activation, max-pooling operations, dropout regularization, and fully connected layers for binary classification. The model was trained using the Adam optimization algorithm and evaluated using multiple performance metrics, including accuracy, precision, recall, specificity, F1-score, and Area Under the Receiver Operating Characteristic Curve (AUC-ROC). Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed framework achieves an accuracy of 95.8%, precision of 96.5%, recall of 94.9%, specificity of 96.2%, F1-score of 95.7%, and an AUC of 0.97. These results indicate strong classification capability and reliable discrimination between pneumonia and normal chest X-ray images. A comparative analysis with established deep learning architectures such as VGG16, ResNet50, InceptionV3, and EfficientNet-B0 shows that the proposed model delivers competitive performance while requiring significantly lower computational resources. Its lightweight architecture enables faster training and inference, making it well-suited for real-time clinical applications, telemedicine platforms, and healthcare facilities with limited computational infrastructure.

Hybrid Work Policies And Their Impact On Employee Productivity, Engagement, And Retention

Authors: Dr. Gyanandre Tripathi, Prof. Dr V. Raghuraman

Abstract: The fast-paced switch to working from home during the COVID-19 crisis has triggered an extensive adoption of hybrid work practices, while the implications of such practices for employees' well-being remain contentious. In this paper, we study the influence of formal hybrid work practices on employee productivity, engagement, and turnover. We use a quantitative survey of 450 workers across information technology, finance, and creative industries to test the hypothesis regarding the influence of hybrid work practices on KPIs, employee engagement, and intentions of voluntary turnover over 12 months using implementation comparisons. Our results show that productivity increases by 14%, and engagement improves by 22% when hybrid work practices imply core collaboration days and flexibility in time management; in this case, voluntary turnover decreases by 31%. At the same time, a bad implementation of hybrid work practices (without structure) negatively affects engagement and reduces it by 9%.

A Study On Cybersecurity Measures And Threat Prevention Strategies In Cryptocurrency Ecosystems

Authors: Ms.Abinaya J, Mr, Don George. E

Abstract: The rapid proliferation of blockchain technology has fundamentally transformed global finance through the introduction of decentralized digital assets. However, the intrinsic characteristics that define cryptocurrencies namely decentralization, pseudonymity, and transactional irreversibility have simultaneously rendered the ecosystem a primary target for sophisticated cyber-attacks. This study investigates the critical dichotomy between the "code is law" philosophy and the imperative need for robust cybersecurity frameworks within a rapidly expanding market capitalization. This paper provides a multi-layered architectural analysis of vulnerabilities across the network, infrastructure, and application layers of the cryptocurrency ecosystem. Specifically, it examines systemic threats such as 51% attacks, smart contract exploits (including reentrancy and logic bugs), decentralized finance (DeFi) rug pulls, and sophisticated social engineering schemes. To address these vulnerabilities, the study evaluates the efficacy of current defense-in-depth mechanisms, including air-gapped cold storage solutions, multi-signature protocols, third-party smart contract auditing, and privacy-enhancing Zero-Knowledge Proofs (ZKPs). Furthermore, the research explores the integration of regulatory frameworks (AML/KYC standards) and proactive technological defenses like real-time on-chain analytics. Ultimately, this study proposes an enhanced, holistic threat prevention strategy designed to mitigate systemic risks, eliminate single points of failure, and safeguard the future integrity of digital asset platforms.
