Abstract: Background- Green buildings have emerged as an important approach towards achieving sustainable development in rapidly urbanizing cities. The continuous growth of urban population, increasing energy consumption, water scarcity, pollution, waste generation and depletion of natural resources have created a need for environmentally responsible construction practices. Bangalore, now widely known as Bengaluru, is one of India’s rapidly developing metropolitan cities and has experienced significant urbanization and economic growth. This development has increased the demand for residential, commercial and institutional buildings and consequently increased pressure on energy, water and other natural resources. Purpose- This study focuses on the importance of green buildings for sustainable development in Bangalore city. It explains the different forms of green energy and sustainable technologies that can be integrated into green buildings. The study particularly focuses on solar energy, green roofs, vertical forests, rainwater harvesting, water recycling and other resource-efficient practices. The purpose is to understand how the integration of these technologies can reduce environmental impact and contribute to sustainable urban development. Methodology- The study is descriptive in nature and is primarily based on secondary data. Information has been collected from research journals, books, reports, government publications, green building organizations, websites and other relevant secondary sources. The study reviews existing information relating to green buildings, renewable energy, water management and sustainable development, with particular reference to Bangalore. Findings- The study finds that the integration of green energy and resource-efficient technologies in buildings can contribute significantly to sustainable development. Solar energy can reduce dependence on conventional sources of electricity, while green roofs and vegetation can contribute to improved microclimate and energy efficiency. Rainwater harvesting and water recycling can reduce pressure on conventional water sources. Green building practices can also improve indoor environmental quality, natural lighting, ventilation and thermal comfort. The Indian Green Building Council recognizes water conservation, energy efficiency, materials and resources, and indoor environmental quality as important components of green building design. Its Green New Buildings rating system also identifies measurable environmental benefits from green building practices. Practical Implications- Green buildings can provide environmental, economic and social benefits. They can reduce energy and water consumption, minimize waste, improve indoor environmental quality and support the conservation of natural resources. For Bangalore, adoption of green building practices can be particularly useful because the city is experiencing rapid urbanization, increasing energy demand and water-related challenges. Greater awareness, skilled professionals, appropriate financing and stronger policy support can encourage wider adoption of green building technologies.
